Some people still don't understand that Kia is the brand of the future, but that's just because they're not looking in the right places.
We've been following their brand development with great interest the past few years and have noticed great strides in the right direction. While people who buy Audis and BMWs will dismiss the Koreans as wannabes, normal buyers have taken to Kia's 7-year warranty an their attractive prices.

The reason we're not 100% in love with cars like the Picanto, Rio and Cee'd is their engines. The diesels on offer are at the top of their game, but until now there have been no good small turbo petrol engines.

At a Geneva Motor Show event, a company representative announced something very interesting. Kia has has spent time adding Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection – T-GDI engines to their entire lineup. Four new engines were announced:

  • Kappa 1.0 T-GDi with 120 (using turbocharger intercooler), developed for use in Kia's sub-compact cars such as Rio and Rio sedan as well as in the Carens.
  • Kappa 1.2 T-GDI engine (coming to the new i30 hatchback and Kia cee’d). This could be a viable alternative to the 1.6-liter producing about the same power but lots more torque.
  • Gamma 1.6 T-GDI engine (already available in Hyundai Veloster) that was launched on the Cee'd GT and Pro_Cee'd GT
  • Theta 2.0 T-GDI engine producing 245 PS in transversal applications.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
