While enthusiasts wait for the all-new-for-2018 JL Wrangler to step into the limelight, don’t forget that the JK Wrangler still sells like crazy. The 2017 model year sure is a proper one-up from 2016, especially those LED headlights, but the last iteration of the JK is being recalled for the second time in less than two months.
The first time around, Fiat Chrysler announced in October that 182,743 units of the 2016 and 2017 model year Jeep Wrangler are being called back over wiring that could disconnect in the event of a crash. If that were to happen, the front airbags and seatbelt pretensions might fail to deploy.

More recently, 359 examples of the 2017 Jeep Wrangler are being recalled for a potential fuel leak. According to the defect notice published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s site, these cars “may have been built with a fuel tank control valve that was improperly manufactured.”

In a nutshell, an inoperative valve is prone to leak fuel after a rollover crash or dump debris in the tank. Overfill of the tank during refueling is also possible. Jeep singled out the root cause of this mess-up to be “loose tooling on one of two parallel weld lines at Kautex Textron’s manufacturing facility.”

This condition led to the potential cracking of the control valve during the fuel tank’s assembly. Mind you, the supplier is to blame for this error, not Jeep. The automaker will notify known owners in due time, with the recall expected to kick off on January 2, 2017. Dealers are instructed to inspect the fuel tank and replace it together with the sending unit. Free of charge, naturally.

In the meantime, those who have taken delivery of the 2017 Jeep Wrangler are recommended to call 1-800-853-1403 for more information. When the operator asks, tell him that the number for this recall is S90.
