Recall: Jeep Identifies Software Issue Affecting 181,999 Units of the Compass

Slotted between the Renegade and recently discontinued Cherokee, the Compass compact crossover is under recall in its home market. 181,999 units are called back in the US over iffy software that prevents the driver from adjusting the backlight of the instrument panel cluster.
Chrysler became aware of this problem on April 12, the day the Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance organization within FCA US LLC was notified of the aforementioned condition. The engineering department reviewed the issue until August 1, determining that the body control module had been incorrectly programmed.

As per federal motor vehicle safety standard number 101 for controls and displays, a vehicle's controls and indicators must feature at least two levels of brightness. In direct sunlight, the instrument panel cluster may not be visible to the driver, which may distract the driver's attention from the road ahead and the task of driving.

Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that Irish-American automotive technology specialist APTIV supplied both the body control module and software. No later than October 3, dealers nationwide will be instructed to update the BCM software at no cost to affected owners.

Owner notifications will be sent by first-class mail on or about October 3 as well. Suspect vehicles were produced for the 2022 and 2023 model years, with build dates ranging between February 17, 2021 and July 26, 2023.

Owners can identify whether their crossovers are called back via the VIN look-up tool on the federal watchdog's website. Speaking of which, the Compass for the US market features vehicle identification numbers beginning with 3, indicating that the vehicle was made in Mexico.

The assembly plant in question is located in Toluca. Completed in 1968, the complex currently makes the Compass exclusively. Prior to it, Toluca was tasked with the production of the Dodge Journey, technically similar Fiat Freemont, Cinquecento, and Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Priced at $28,400 as opposed to $28,345 for the Renegade and $37,695 for the Cherokee, the Compass offers eight grades for the 2023 model year, all of them all-wheel drive. The most spartan trim level of the bunch is the Sport, whereas the High Altitude can be yours from $39,235 (excluding the destination charge and extras).

All of them feature a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which Jeep also uses in the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler. Connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission supplied by Hyundai, said lump develops a respectable 200 ponies and 221 pound-feet (300 Nm).

A huge upgrade from the 2.4L naturally-aspirated Tigershark and ZF 9HP nine-speed automatic of the 2022 model, the 2023 Jeep Compass is more frugal as well. EPA estimates 27 miles to the gallon on the combined test cycle, as in 8.7 liters per 100 kilometers. By comparison, the Tigershark-9HP combo offers no more than 25 miles to the gallon (9.4 liters per 100 kilometers).
