Jean Todt Confirms Run for FIA Presidency

Less than 24 hours after FIA president Max Mosley publicly revealed he will back Jean Todt for the presidency of the ruling body in October should he decide to run for it, the former Ferrari boss confirmed he will stand for election. The Frenchman will therefore join former WRC champion Ari Vatanen on the candidature list for a maiden FIA presidency mandate.

"Following the decision of Max Mosley not to seek a further term of office and his unequivocal support of my candidacy, I have written to the FIA membership to inform them that I wish to stand for the presidency of the FIA," said Todt, as reported by British magazine Autosport.

"Given the unique structure of the FIA and its twin roles in sport and mobility it takes more than a president to run the organisation and I am delighted to announce my leadership team."

"For the position of deputy president for mobility I would propose Brian Gibbons, chief executive of the New Zealand Automobile Association; for deputy president for sport I would propose, Graham Stoker, chairman of the Council of the UK's Motor Sports Association; and for president of the Senate I would propose Nick Craw, president of ACCUS and the current FIA deputy president (sport). I am confident that together we will offer the FIA the opportunity to elect a dynamic leadership team of outstanding experience and commitment," added the Frenchman.

Yesterday afternoon, in a letter sent to all the FIA member clubs and published on the international body's very official site, Mosley confirmed he will not run for another mandate as FIA president. In addition, he gave his unconditional support for the candidature of Todt, asking the club members to vote for him as his replacer.

I believe the right person to head that team would be Jean Todt. Jean is unquestionably the outstanding motorsport manager of his generation, and arguably of any generation,” said Mosley in the letter.

He has also been CEO of a successful car manufacturer. He thus has experience in charge of a large and complex organization, something which is an essential qualification for any future president of the FIA.”

“Most recently, he has been involved with his partner Michelle Yeoh in FIA road safety and environmental campaigns all over the world, thus demonstrating a commitment to the major public policy initiatives which are such an important part of the FIA's work.”

“I must emphasise he would not in any way be a motor industry candidate. He would have no special relationship with his former company Ferrari, nor with Peugeot Citroen, the manufacturer behind his former World Rally, Cross-Country and Le Mans teams. He would preserve the independence of the FIA.”

“If he agrees to stand, I think he would be the ideal person to continue, but also to extend the work of the past 16 years. He can be relied on in all areas where the FIA is active. I very much hope you will give him your support,
” added Mosley in the statement.
