Dennis, Craw Join Candidate List for FIA Presidency

Approximately 3 months to this year's elections for the FIA presidency, and a vacant seat for the first time in years, several names are surfacing in the media as potential replacements of Max Mosley at the helm of the ruling body.

As you might have noticed it already, nobody seems to pay any attention to Mosley's threats to continue as president of the FIA for another mandate. While some of the FIA members are having a hard time convincing themselves that the presidency is indeed up for grabs, several “outside” figures of the motor racing world have been linked with the job in recent days.

Apart from Jean Todt, whose name seems on everyone's lips lately, Ron Dennis has also entered the equation earlier this week. Although he publicly dismissed all plans to run for the FIA role, Dennis is viewed as one of the public figures that might have a chance of replacing his long-time rival.

Also, Dennis' comments towards the possibility to run for president were made while he was still with McLaren. At the time, he insisted he was completely focused on his work with the Woking based team, but did leave the door open for a FIA move in the future.

The news that he might run for the FIA spot came via motor sport boss and former president of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) Vicky Chandhok, who confirmed he is honored to be part of candidature list that includes Dennis and Todt. However, he insisted he'll have to decline the offer to stand for election.

It is certainly a great privilege to see my name doing the rounds along with Dennis and (Jean) Todt. But I personally feel that I am not ready for it,” the father of GP2 driver Karun Chandhok was quoted as saying to the Asian Age.

Also in contention for the leading FIA role, as recently surfaced in the media, are FIA sporting regulations boss Nick Craw (USA) and 1981 world rally champion Ari Vatanen. The latter was a member of the European Parliament until this year's elections.
