James May Ordered a Ferrari 458 Speciale, but Then Jeremy Clarkson’s Fracas Happened

The biggest problem the members of a band that split face is usually the fact that none of them gets to sing anymore. Sure, James May did try something with a flute at one point, but we’re not truly talking about making music here. The fact that Captain Slow’s cash flow got slower wouldn’t be such a big issue if it weren’t for that Ferrari 458 Speciale he ordered a couple of days before the fracas.
Yep, it turns out Jeremy Clarkson seriously ruined it for everybody. May confirmed the rumored plans in his Sunday Times column, claiming that everything was going pretty well right before Top Gear’s lead singer lost and punched that BBC producer. Apparently, the boys were “on the brink” of renewing their contracts for Top Gear, which is also why May decided to order for a nice exotic ride.

There we were, all three of us, on the brink of a new three-year contract to make Top Gear, after which we would definitely chuck it in with dignity and hand the reins to a new generation, assuming we were still alive. There were a few details to resolve about time frames and other mundane stuff, but the groaning draft version of this document was actually sitting on my desk,” the 52-year-old TV star wrote.

Expensive ride, but no salary

May admitted it was not only a great privilege for the band, but the offer also came with a “handsome salary”. It must have been quite an impressive sum since he went on and ordered for a £200,000 ($302,249) Ferrari 458 Speciale.

Everything in the future shattered like the mishandles Christmas bauble that the future turns out to be. I had all gone. All, that is, except the order for a 458 Speciale lodged in Ferrari’s factory system, with only the final details to be confirmed. Oh c**k, as I used to say when I was on telly,” May added.

As far as we know, buying a Ferrari implies paying an advance that could range from 10% up to 50% of the final price, depending on how the company considers the customer. Sure, this price can differ from one case to another, but if May ends up calling it quits, then he sure has a lot of cash to drop.

Come to think about it, maybe this is why both James May and Richard Hammond keep selling their assets at various auctions.
