I'll be honest with you guys, I have read all of James May's tweets, but never believed he was really baking a Shephard's pie or learning to play classic marching tunes on the recorder. Yet that's exactly what the ex Top Gear host is doing with his time and even posted it all on a Youtube channel he titled "JM's unemployment tube".
The funny thing is some of these videos might reach a million views in the next couple of days, so he could be making money by… cocking about, as he would put it. Food and music have always been important hobbies for Captain Slow, and the end of Top Gear gives him time to pursue them.
My favorite fact about May is the hidden message he put in one of Autocar's print issues, for which he got fired. But there are things even I didn't know about him until today. For example, he is the son of a priest and used to be a choirboy.
I did, however, know that he studied music professionally, with the piano and flute being his preferred instruments. Guess that explains why he wants to play the recorder, or even knows what a recorder is (I didn't).
After Clarkson was sacked by Top Gear following a fight with producer Oisin Tymon, both James and Richard Hammond said they would not stay on the show. May has hinted he could go back to living a "normal" life.
"I might want to do something completely different with my life, I'm quite old now. (I might do) something outside of cars, I always wanted to be a teacher," the ex Top Gear presenter said in an interview outside his home some days ago.
For us, this is a depressing end to a career, but James seems to be taking it well. Just listen to him play the British Grenadiers March!
