Nissan’s Infiniti luxury brand is looking to “de-Americanize” its models in order to attract more buyers in Europe, but in Asia as well, company president Johan de Nysschen revealed yesterday.
Speaking to Wards Auto, de Nysschen said Infiniti needs to minimize its “strong US-centric focus” to become a strong contender for BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the premium market. In other words, the automaker wants to add more small-displacement engines to its lineup and develop a flagship coupe-styled four-door model.
“Our strong US-centric focus has driven product strategy, and for Infiniti to be positioned as a strong contender in the premium market, we really do need to break the mold of (that) very strong focus. I mean, goodness, the entry-level engine on an Infiniti is a 330 HP V6,” de Nysschen told Wards Auto.
Besides designing an all-new flagship sedan, Infiniti is also working on a new small vehicle market approach with the launch of the Q30 compact and the introduction of turbocharged four-cylinder engines as part of the Daimler-Nissan deal.
