Construction Begins on Infiniti's First European Factory

Nissan yesterday announced that construction of the first Infiniti production facilities in Europe has begun. The factory will be an expansion of their existing facilities in Britain, costing £250 million to build.
Up until this point, it's been really difficult for European customers to take Infiniti seriously. Despite their luxury ambitions, none of the models they offered really matched what was going on in the auto business there. But now, they have a Europe-based product director, Nicolas Tschann, and are working on a car which might have a fighting chance.

The Q30 was revealed as a concept in Frankfurt, somewhere between a large compact hatch and a crossover. It's aimed straight at the heart of the German industry and will be produced in Sunderland, where parent company Nissan has expensive production capabilities.

Sunderland currently makes everything from the Leaf EV to the Juke crossover. As soon as next month, they are expected to shift to the second generation of the Qashqai crossover, which most likely shares its platform with the upcoming Infiniti Q30.

As you can see from the picture above, a trim and chassis shop expansion and a body shop extension. This hints that the Q30 will be built on the same assembly line as other Sunderland cars.

Executive Vice President Trevor Mann, and Fintan Knight, Vice President for Infiniti Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “Securing the Infiniti Q30 for production at Sunderland was a tremendous achievement by the workforce and reflects the quality levels which they have reached. The existing Sunderland plant is already the largest in UK automotive history and this £250m investment will move the plant even further up the value chain and reconfirm our commitment to their future.”
