What goes up, must come down! But it seems the opposite is also true in the American auto industry. The Korean automakers profited hugely from Toyota and Honda’s problems with recalls, the strong yen and numerous natural disasters that hit Asia. Now, the tables have turned, and Honda could be the one to benefit from Hyundai’s problems, according to Bloomberg. Why? It’s simple.
Hyundai and Kia are not only facing a huge financial penalty, but also a hit to their corporate image. Still, buyers are looking for affordable and economical cars, and Honda is ideally placed, especially now that they’re switching to a revamped Civic, which will be shown next week at the LA Auto Show.
“We’ve been conservative in our EPA estimates,” said Mike Accavitti, Honda’s head of U.S. marketing, to Bloomberg. “We triple check everything so customers are satisfied with the mileage they get in the real world.”
