New Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Puts Tesla Model 3 Performance To Shame With 641 HP on Tap

Hyundai has been working for a long time on its sportiest EV offering, the Ioniq 5 N. The electric racer was finally unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, England. The first electric N model ever relies on a 641-horsepower powertrain to shine on the track and the road.
Last month, Hyundai announced completing the development of the Ioniq 5 N, its first performance EV. On July 11, the first pictures of the electric sports car were leaked on the internet, leaving little to the imagination. Technical details remained undisclosed, although we kinda knew what to expect. Technical advisor Albert Biermann previously said the electric N model would have at least 600 horsepower. The Ioniq 5 N was always supposed to beat the Kia EV6 GT, which already sports 576 horsepower.

With the official unveiling at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, I know Hyundai fans won't be disappointed. The Ioniq 5 can unleash up to 641 horsepower (478 kW/650 PS) on the track with the N Grin Boost activated, albeit for a limited 10-second window. This allows it to sprint from zero to 100 kph (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds, with a 0-60 mph expected in 3.3-3.2 seconds. This is still not fast enough to beat the Tesla Model 3 Performance, despite the latter having "only" 527 horsepower. The American sportscar can do 0-60 in 3.1 seconds.

With everyday settings, it can still develop 600 horsepower (448 kW/609 PS) and reach a top speed of 260 kph (162 mph). This makes it the fastest model built on the E-GMP platform, although speed and seconds are not the only things that matter. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N features a stiffer body-in-white structure, with 42 more welding points and 2.1 meters of additional adhesives compared to the non-N model. The motor and battery mountings are reinforced, while the front and rear subframes are enhanced for lateral rigidity.

Hyundai claims that the drive axles are inspired by the World Rally Championship models, being reinforced to endure stronger electric motor torque. The steering column has also been strengthened for improved rigidity, enhancing steering response and feedback. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N features a specially tuned N R-MDPS (Rack-Mounted Motor-Driven Power Steering) system with a higher steering ratio and enhanced torque feedback. Hyundai also used engineering tricks such as N Pedal, N Drift Optimizer, and N Torque Distribution to maximize responsiveness and agility.

Hyundai engineers improved the thermal management system to allow the 641-horsepower boost in extreme racetrack conditions. The Ioniq 5 N features an increased cooling area, a better motor oil cooler, and a battery chiller. The independent radiators for the battery and motor maximize IONIQ 5 N's resistance to performance degradation during intense track driving. Drivers have a plethora of settings to optimize the electric drivetrain for either a short burst of power during drag races or endurance on a racetrack.
