A man working as a chef at a diner in Virginia rammed his Hummer H2 into the front entrance of the venue repeatedly. He only stopped when the vehicle set itself on fire.
While the Fairfax County Police spokesperson said that they cannot confirm the crash was intentional, it’s hard to see what could have accidentally happened to cause a vehicle to hit the same object three times in a row.
An investigation into the matter is underway, but police representatives did not mention whether the driver is charged with any crime at the moment.
It all started with the driver crashing the vehicle into the front door of the restaurant. After the first impact, he backed up and rammed the building again.
The third and final crash between the Hummer and the building was followed by fire. Witness reports claim the flames appeared to start in the passenger compartment, not in the engine bay. If investigators discover that this is true, the driver might have started the fire himself.
According to the Silver Diner spokesperson, the driver has been an employee for two years, and was fired after the incident (pun not intended). The unnamed man worked as a cook, but took bereavement leave starting April 5, 2016. It is unclear whether the incident happened while the employee was still on leave, or if this was supposed to be his first day back at work.
According to NBC Washington, three people were taken to the hospital after the incident, while a fourth person was treated at the scene. The unnamed man was also brought to the hospital, and witness reports say he refused to exit the burning vehicle after the crash and had to be pulled out by customers and staff.
Among the people injured was a man who had the bad luck of being hit by the SUV as the vehicle struck the building. Silver Diner representatives announced they would provide trauma counseling to affected employees and customers. According to them, they had no “indication that the employee would harm himself or others.”
