The Variable Valve Timing system on a Toyota 4AGE 20 engine alters the timing of valve lifts in order to improve performance, fuel economy and emissions.
Replacing one of the VVT pulleys is not too hard, but you should be extra careful not to mess up the timing. You will need a carjack and a complete set of tools, because you will unmount a lot of parts. Here are the steps:
  • Jack up the car and secure its position
  • Remove the front right wheel and the wheel well’s plastic protections to gain access to the crankshaft pulley
  • Remove the belt away from the crankshaft pulley
  • Take the crankshaft pulley off
  • Set the timing system to dead center according to the marks on the pulleys and engine block
  • Loosen the tensioner bolt to take out the timing belt according to the video
  • Slide the timing belt off the pulleys
  • Remove the nut from the VVT pulley and take it out
  • Put the new pulley in and mount everything back on.
