The following video will show you how to disassemble the drive belt tensioner of a 1.6-liter Toyota four-cylinder VVTi engine.
Sometimes, is good to replace the tensioner when you change the actual drive belt every 100,000 km or so. You’ll need a 12 and 17 mm socket ratchet. Here are some tips on how to do it.

After securing the timing gears and removing the drive belt look for the plastic role mounted on a metal arm. That is the tensioner.

To remove it, first take out the big 17 mm bolt from the middle of the arm. Then move upwards and remove the 12 mm nut located almost at the top of the engine. The tensioner will now be free and you can take it out.

Check the video bellow for more info.
