Standing the bike on the rear wheel while thrusting forward with the engine screaming through the pipes, leaving behind the cagers with their jaws dropped and tons of women lusting. It’s not like that usually, and you can end up wrecking your bike.
Yeah, I get it, it’s cool to pop a wheelie from time to time, but it’s dangerous to do so on public roads (also illegal), and there’s always the chance that something can go wrong, your bike get nailed, and you bust a few bones.
Especially if you’re a beginner and have no clue whatsoever about what you are about to do. An example you’ll get to see in the video below which should teach you and the rider a lesson about safety.
So, we have this guy on a white Honda CBX250 filmed by one of his friends on an empty road trying to do a wheelie. I’d like first to congratulate the guy on picking that stretch of road in the middle of nowhere because that’s not exactly the right bike you’d want to learn how to stand up.
Now comes the stupid part - trying to wheelie from a standstill in first gear, which is not the way to do so. Usually, 1st gear is kinda short-legged and uncontrollable to pop a wheelie, especially from a stop, which is a no-no in most cases.
When you want to learn to stand your bike on one wheel, you can’t go with a 1-liter engine, nor a 250cc as you need the right amount of power for your level. You don’t want to overdo it, nor struggle to lift the front end.
Then, you have to be in second gear while going over 15 km/h (9 mph). Only then you do the quick clutch-in-throttle-up-clutch-out maneuver while covering the rear brake all the time in case you go up to fast. And you do it gradually; you don’t have to be all the way up from the first time.
Else, you end up like this dude. The action starts at 6:11. Ride safe!
