Honda is set to recall 34,000 units of the MY 2016 Civic in the United States, according to a report.
While not yet published on official channels, the report first mentioned on the CivicX forum speaks of a stop sale order and a safety recall for the MY 2016 Civic. Around 34,000 vehicles are affected by the issue, and Honda has decided not to sell them until they are repaired.
According to the report, the problem is caused by missing or improperly placed piston pin snap rings. If there’s an actual fault with these units, the engine may stall or fail.
All units in dealer stock must be inspected and repaired per service bulletin 16-017, which implies the replacement of piston pin snap rings. The recall will commence once the parts, tools, and complete repair info are available.
Honda technicians will use a borescope to inspect all four cylinders to confirm the proper placement of the piston pin snap ring. If any vehicle shows concerns, it will be fixed by the carmaker without any cost to the customer.
In case the damage has extended, the replacement may include supplementary parts, like piston pins or rings, damaged pistons, or other related engine components.
Currently, Honda of America is procuring the necessary borescopes and replacement parts to satisfy this recall.
The carmaker has informed the NHTSA of the stop sale order and the safety recall. On the NHTSA recall page, we encountered a complaint registered on February 2, 2016, regarding an incident that took place on January 30, 2016.
A customer from Riverside complained that there was a piston clip recall from Honda with no fix until mid-March, as he was informed by Honda's Customer Service department.
The complaint also stated that the recall action was not publicly released by Honda at the time of encountering the issue. No accidents or injuries have been caused by the problem so far.
