In 1964, Ford and DST Industries teamed up in order to display the iconic Mustang on the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building. Fast-forward a number of decades and here they are doing it again, this time displaying the 2015 Mustang Convertible on top of the Manhattan landmark building.
Ford and DST didn't use a a portable street crane to lift up the pony car 1,050 feet (320 meters) above ground level and helicopter delivery was out of the question as well. That's why the DST Industries team of engineers and fabricators sectioned the car so that it could fit into the building's elevator, also building custom rolling carts and wooden crates for each section of the dismantled Mustang.
In total, the team had only five hours to assemble the vehicle on top of the Empire State Building, between 2 a.m. and 7 in the morning. The Triple Yellow 2015 Mustang Convertible will be on display for visitors between April 16 and 17. When the deck closes to the public at 2 a.m. April 18, the crew will descend on the display car to reverse the entire process and remove it before visitors return in the morning.
