Based on the 2015 Mustang GT fastback with the optional Performance Pack, the brand-new 50th Anniversary Edition pays homage to the illustrious half-century history of America's favorite pony car. Because the original model was launched at the 1964 New York World Fair, Ford decided to build it in only 1,964 units, with deliveries to commence this fall.
It comes standard with virtually every available optional extra available in the Mustang catalogue. The only choices customers have to make are the exterior paint job (Wimbledon White or Kona Blue) and deciding which gearbox suits them best: the six-speed manual or a reworked automatic with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.
If you opt for the stick shift 'box, that'll also get you a Torsen differential with 3.73:1 ratio. Take the auto and you'll net a limited-slip diff with a 3.55:1 final-drive ratio for extreme sideways hooning. This special edition accounts for the only 2015MY Mustang you can get with the Performance Pack and auto 'box combo.
Pop the hood and you'll be greeted by 420 horsepower and 390 lb-ft (528 Nm) of torque thanks to the 5.0-liter V8 Coyote engine borrowed from the GT model. All four corners of the car are equipped with high-performance Y-speed-rated Pirelli P-Zero summer tires, while stopping power comes from massive Brembo brakes.
Chrome bezels surrounding the base of the three taillamp blades take inspiration from the original 1962 design proposal by Gale Halderman that became the basis for the production model that debuted in 1964. The Wimbledon White car pictured in our gallery is the same color serial No. 0001 Mustang was finished in April 1964.
"The new Mustang blends a muscular, contemporary shape with design cues that define it as quintessentially Mustang," said Moray Callum, Ford vice president of design. "The 50 Year Limited Edition adds details that set it apart from other Mustangs, while hearkening back to the 1965 original."
Another visual element that takes you back to the '60s is the louvered rear quarter-windows. Unlike the external louvers of the 1965 fastback, the new windows are comprised of layered sheets of glass.
Aesthetics and rarity aside, this is a very special vehicle from behind the wheel as well. The double-brow instrument panel has an axel spin finish, coupled by a special serialized plaque on the passenger side. The leather-wrapped steering wheel benefits from cashmere stitching, also used on the instrument panel, shifter boot, center armrest, door inserts and seats. As for the seats, they're finished in two-tone cashmere and black leather, also featuring the Mustang 50 Years logo on the seat backs.
“We wanted to provide our most dedicated fans with the emotion of the original Mustang in a 21st-century car,” said Ford executive chairman Bill Ford Jr. in a statement ahead of the reveal at the New York International Auto Show. “With this 50 Year Limited Edition, I believe we have accomplished our goal.”
