Did you know the first electric car was made in 1884? That’s two years before Karl Benz patented his internal combustion automobile. These silent machines were pretty popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century because of their simplicity and smooth operation.
Nonetheless, the advancements in the combustion engine development enabled gasoline cars to offer those two things we still lack today from EVs - bigger range and quicker refueling.

In the 1990s, humanity discovered it burned too much dinosaur essence and started to think at alternative ways of powering a car as a countermeasure the the air pollution created in the meantime. And electricity turned out to be the perfect choice.

Compared to those from 100 years ago, today’s technology enabled current EVs to offer increased comfort, look appealing enough and move a lot faster. And as you will see in the video bellow, their power can easily surpass that of a supercar.

Leaving aside some electric dragster prototypes that were built to go as fast as it’s possible on a quarter mile, the fastest vehicle powered by electricity with the ability to corner is the Mitsubishi MiEV Evolotion III (pictured above), which broke the Pikes Peak record this year. It’s electric motors make up to 604 hp and the whole car weighs under 1,400 kg (3,086 lb) with the driver.

Where does the rest of today’s EVs stack up? Check the video bellow for the rest of the top.
