Never let a good PR opportunity pass you by – this could be an excellent motto for Heinz. The ketchup company is stepping in to pay for damages to the car of a reformed ketchup thief.
All snark aside, this is actually a lovely, heartwarming story about a person from Forked River, New Jersey, who stole a bottle of Heinz ketchup from a local eatery. That person, whom staff believe is a 20 something-year-old woman, returned 2 bigger bottles of the same brand of ketchup some days later, after karma came back to bite her in the butt and she crashed her car.
The icing on the cake is that Heinz has reached out to the reformed thief on social media and was able to track her down to discuss the possibility of helping out with repair costs. How’s that for improved karma?
“A few weeks ago, I had taken one of your ketchup bottles off the table because for some reason I thought it'd be ‘risky’,” the thief wrote. “I am as square as they come and this is the worst thing I've done. Well, a few hours I did it someone crashed into my car, and since then, my karma, luck, and life have been s**t.”
The customer apologized and called herself an “awful person” and stated that she hoped returning the ketchup would mean her karma would turn around. The owner of the eatery was so impressed with the letter and the gesture that she posted the note on Facebook, where it went viral. She also told the New York Post that she would hire the “thief” in a blink of an eye because this gesture proves she’s a nice person.
Heinz thinks so too.
“Reformed Ketchup Thief,” the company writes in a post on Twitter. “We get it, Heinz makes you do crazy things. In honor of your good Ketchup Karma, we’d love to help you with your car damages. DM us. We’ll keep your identity top secret.”
In an update, Heinz says they’ve been able to track down the thief and are speaking with her about the repair costs.
