So you thought that 381 HP and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque are an amazing amount to be squeezed out of a 3-liter diesel plant, huh? Well, think again, as Hamann now has an engine tuning kit that takes that power level well over the 400 HP barrier.
Their program will grant your car 462 HP and 890 Nm (656 lb-ft) of torque thanks to those beautiful three turbochargers hooked up to it. Since this is Hamann we’re talking about, you shouldn’t worry about viability either.
Of course, there are other choices out there as well, such as the guys from DS Auto for example but the Swiss will only go as far as 420 HP and don’t have the pedigree of Hamann. As a matter of fact, the tuning range for the M50d model is quite limited at the moment.
The German tuner is also offering a variety of parts for the visual appeal of the car. Their trademark wheels are now available in sizes up to 23” in diameter so you know that the comfortable character of the X5 will be gone once you get them on.
Other bits and pieces include a new bumper, new side skirts, front lip, mirror covers and even a center diffuser for the rear bumper. For the aural experience, there’s also a new exhaust system available while the extra grunt can be handled by a new suspension along with some beefier brakes.
All of this is available at Hamann right now. The thing is, they will cost a pretty penny and for most people out there, the stock performance of the M50d will be enough.
And who could argue when the SUV does 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.3 seconds and is claimed to return 35.1 mpg on average (6.7 l/100 km)? Bare in mind that the starting price in Germany for this car is €85,560 and to that you’ll have to add the parts from Hamann. Unfortunately, the US doesn’t get this version at the moment and that’s just a damn shame!
