The recent Chicago Auto Show saw countless machines that made countless car lovers go weak in the knees. However, this year's spectacle presented a machine that is right up my own alley, Earthcruiser and GMC's insane brainchild, a Hummer EV decked out with the best that EarthCruiser has to offer.
Folks, the name GMC really needs no introduction. After all, the chances that you're driving a vehicle from the timeless manufacturer are rather good. But have you ever heard of EarthCruiser? If you have, then you've witnessed some rather amazing overland vehicles in your day.

Well, a recent collaboration has birthed a magnificent creature, a souped-up Hummer EV Pickup designed to be one variation of what the future of EV mobile living and camping could bring to the table. Actually, it's not just one possible future, but rather, a destination that's already here. That's right, folks, what we have before us is a real machine and one we can get our hands on in early 2024, as in right now!

So, what the heck are we in for with this machine, and will it stand a serious chance of exploring the greater outdoors? Moreover, will it be able to take you deep into the wild, away from neighbors, with only the local fauna and flora to keep you company? Time to find out.

Now, everything starts off with nothing more than GMC's Hummer EV Pickup, which, according to GMC's website, can offer a peak range of 381 miles (613 km) on its most optimized variation and can produce up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque. That would be the 3x variation.

As for where EarthCruiser comes in - my favorite aspect of this build - they're responsible for the construction seen strapped to the back of the Pickup. Overall, carbon fiber is the material chosen for the job of creating the cab-over habitat, which also leads me to believe that this thing isn't going to be cheap, but it was a must if you ask me.

One of the main issues with EVs is the way their range suddenly drops the moment you start loading it up beyond the weight that a manufacturer used to test it with. So, carbon fiber, being as light and strong as it is, was the right and seemingly only choice.

With this material, EarthCruiser seems to have brought their A-game to the table because, well, look at this thing! Not only does it fit perfectly onto the rear of the Pickup, but its overall design looks as though the Hummer was designed for this all along, or maybe the shell for the truck; was it the chicken or the egg? No matter, it looks absolutely amazing, for lack of more Google-friendly words.

Beyond just looks, there's also plenty of functionality incorporated into the habitat. From those lateral storage bays to the way you access the unit and the pop-top design, all of it is made to maximize efficiency while boasting the necessities to survive in case you actually run out of juice in the middle of the wild. If I've understood the manufacturer's website correctly, it's even four-season ready.

Now, to access this truck-mounted home, we have to drop the tailgate, lift up the upper half of the shell as you would a tank - fitting, don't you think - and hop inside. Once we do, we'll find ourselves in the center of a living room, dinette, kitchen, and possibly an alternative sleeping space, too, all at once. The main bedding area is found in the cab-over section.

While neither GMC nor EarthCruiser have clear and real images of the interior - just renderings - one man, dubbed generalmotorjeff on Instagram, took a trip to the Chicago Auto Show and was able to catch a glimpse of this thing, in the flesh, and may I say, I am impressed! Be sure to check the account below.

Aside from some very professional shots of the Pickup's exterior, generalmotorjeff also takes us inside, revealing cabinetry, storage bays, the galley, and even gives us a feel for the bedding. We can also catch a glimpse of the window ripstop covers found all around the upper level of the enclosure.

A few features we can't see include things like the fridge, under-bed storage, 460 Ah battery, inverter, onboard water heater, and a few others. We even have access to filtered and unfiltered water. But, the real attractive feature here is its habitat's ability to accommodate 605 W of solar power.

But, it's not perfect, at least not in my opinion - feel free to comment on the fact that there are only five, count them, five gallons (19 liters) of fresh water available, and that with this, we should be able to "venture off-grid with up to seven days," according to EarthCruiser's website. I think we're going to need more water.

Now, at this stage, you can reserve your EarthCruiser x Hummer EV for no less than $100. It looks like these two crews are looking to gauge interest in this mobile home, and with enough, we may very well be in for a neat little treat this year.

All that's left to do now is wait around for a few folks to take their first steps into EV overlanding and off-grid living with this habitat and stand by to see if range anxiety kicks in once we see those numbers. Time reveals all, including the cost of all that carbon; nothing has been announced yet.
