GM CEO Confirms: Saab's Closure Continues

The recently-appointed "permanent" GM CEO Edward Whitacre said Saab's situation is still uncertain so the US-based manufacturer will continue winding down the brand. Whitacre confirmed that GM has not reached a deal with the involved parties, despite reports that the company is close to reaching an agreement with Dutch carmaker Spyker as soon as this week.

However, GM's CEO confirmed that Spyker is currently involved in deep takeover talks, without mentioning whether Genii Capital, backed by Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, is still in the race for the Swedish unit.

Meanwhile, the Swedish media rushed to release all kind of rumors regarding the GM - Spyker negotiations, most of them claiming that the Dutch carmaker is close to announce the purchase of Saab. Some of them even hinted that the local government agreed to guarantee loans from the European Investment Bank, but the Swedish officials clearly stated that no such deal has been yet reached.

Spyker is confident that an announcement will be released soon and said in a statement that GM will most likely make a decision in the upcoming days.

"Spyker confirms that talks are ongoing, the outcome of which is still uncertain. As Saab is currently in liquidation talks must end soon," it explained.

But this doesn't necessarily mean that Saab will survive if Spyker takes control of the company. Industry analysts raised concerns that a Spyker - Saab alliance might not work even if GM agrees with it.

"I don't really know what Spyker brings to Saab in terms of expertise, in terms of ability to turn the business around. Equally, on the Saab front, I don't really know how a business that's selling as few units as it sells can ultimately be profitable," Nomura analyst, Michael Tyndall was quoted as saying by Autonews.

"I think it's incredibly difficult to be successful in the segment they're trying to be successful in without a big budget. We're talking about a quasi-premium brand building cars in one the more expensive locations in terms of labor costs. There are many many challenges ahead."
