Before the Obama administration decided to bail out a financially troubled General Motors in 2009, the biggest of the Big Three was at the brink of extinction due to several factors, especially bad management and sky high expenditures. Some of those toxic investments came in the form of trying to save a number of dying automotive marques.
Old GM owned Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn and the Saab brand. In order to keep GM afloat, the US Treasury and Canada tried to sell those old dinosaurs to whoever was interested most. That’s the reason why what we refer to as New GM (after July 10, 2009) comprises of Chevy, Caddy, Buick, GMC, Holden, Opel, Vauxhall and GM Daewoo.

You could say that the restructuring plan sort of resembles what Japanese people do with Bonsai trees, continuously trimming the plant to support growth and long-term maintenance as well. Fast forward to the present day and here we are at the dawn of 2015, with the New GM announcing its second consecutive year of record global sales, which is pretty good especially after the 30-mil strong recall saga.

The automotive giant delivered 9,924,880 vehicles globally last year, surpassing by 2 percent the record set in 2013. This sales volume translates to a highly coveted place in the top three best-selling automakers of 2014, with the VW Group selling a little more than 10 million vehicles around the world.

As you can see in the top 5 markets map above, China and the U.S. of A. bought the most cars, followed by Brazil (which saw a 10.9 percent decrease in volume compared to 2013), the United Kingdom and Canada.
