French criminals beware! The Gendarmerie Nationale is replacing its fleet of rapid intervention vehicles, being scheduled to receive no less than 70 units of the Renault Megane RS.
The Gendarmerie is planning to stay on top of the game, as it has selected the Chassis Cup hardcore version, which offers precision elements such as a limited-slip differential and 18 inch rims.
The standard Megane RS is powered by a 2 liter four-cylinder 16 valve engine that uses turbocharging to deliver 250 hp and a peak torque of 340 Nm. However, the automotive producer said that the engine was “adapted to meet the specific needs of the Gendarmerie in terms of acceleration and speed, which are vital to its work.”
The vehicles were fitted with special law-enforcing equipment by Durisotti, an approved Renault coach-builder.
“Megane R.S. rounds out the equipment used by the Gendarmerie in its remit to control land flows. The Gendarmerie is responsible for the day-to-day safety of the French population across nearly 95 percent of the national territory, the largest part of which concerns the road and highway network. The new vehicle provides it with an adapted tool for fighting certain types of criminality specific to this environment, including the extremely high speed excesses sometimes encountered in vehicle pursuits,
freight theft and assaults committed by highly mobile criminals, and drug trafficker travel (GOFAST),” stated the press release.
The Megane R.S. hot hatches replaces a fleet of Subaru Impreza WRX vehicles, which entered service back in 2006. Renault has offered go-fast vehicles to the Gendarmerie in the past, with the list of cars including the Alpine A110 and A310, as well as the Renault 21 2-liter turbo.
