It might have doors that look like they were stolen from a McLaren and LED everything, but the Kia Niro Concept shown in Frankfurt has a very serious job to do.
It's been designed to show what kind of vehicle would come out if Kia decided it wanted to make a move into the B-segment crossover market, inhabited by the Nissan Juke or Renault Captur.
The Niro is a relatively small two-door, a little bigger than the Rio hatch. Its dimensions are 4,185mm length, 1,850mm width and 1,558mm height.
Power comes from a hybridized system which combines a 160 PS 1.6-liter turbo with a 45 PS electric motor and Kia's hotly anticipated seven-speed dual clutch transmission.
“Right from the start, this particular B-segment project was about looking at where Kia might take its contenders in this part of the market. As designers we have to look at what the future could hold, not just what is probable, and we believe drivers want excitement and new solutions from their vehicles. It is clear that the B-segment is growing as European motorists seek to downsize but it is equally clear that they refuse to give up individuality and distinctiveness – so Niro explores one avenue to satisfy that desire," says Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer at Kia’s Frankfurt office.
