Ford of Britain has announced a £24 million investment program at its Brindgend engine plant in Wales to develop a new fuel-efficient 1.5-liter EcoBoost gasoline engine. The announcement includes Welsh Governemt support of £12 million.
"The Welsh Government has greatly assisted in maximizing the full potential of Ford’s own investment in Bridgend and we are pleased to meet today with the Welsh First Minister and the Minister for Economy to recognize this successful partnership,” said Ford of Britain managing director Mark Ovenden.
Production of the new 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine, that will be built alongside the 1.6-liter EcoBoost powerplant which was introduced in 2011, will start in 2014. Ford’s Bridgend facility delivers 2,668 four-cylinder engines each day, with exports to Spain, Sweden, Germany, Russia, Belgium and the United States. Employment at the Welsh plant will rise to a record of 2,300 workers this year.
Ford Bridgend is one of the Ford UK locations included in the company’s planned £1.5 billion investment announced in 2010 into the development and manufacture of low CO2 emission technology for vehicles by 2015.
