Ford Wants You to Vote on Focus Electric Engine Noise via Facebook

Ford will bring the battery-powered Ford Focus we saw in New York to the market late this year, but the American automaker still needs to put a few finishing touches before the car is ready to take on the LEAF.

The most important thing right now is not chassis fine-tuning or cosmetics, but the sound coming out of the exhaust speakers, alerting passersby that an electric car is coming. We’re not going to talk about the “morality” of a fake engine noise, as that equivocates to blasphemy in our book, but the most appropriate sound for a dignified car.

Four videos were released on Ford’s Youtube page, and given you're actually interested in owning an electric Ford, you might want to vote on the company’s Facebook page. The choices could just as well have been of seagulls or baby seals to please the eco-minded, though we’re sure that can be arranged in the aftermarket world.

In total, there are four choices that are unimaginatively named A, B, C and D. A definitely sounds like a starfighter from Starwars worming up, B is the electric motor equivalent of a V8 (we like this one the best), while C and D are also from sort of Hollywood sci-fi movie, though we can’t really say which right now.

We’ll remind you that the Ford Focus Electric has an electric drivetrain comprising of an electric motor capable of 123 HP and 181 lb-ft of torque, and a single-speed transmission. It’s capable of reaching speeds of up 84 mph (136km/h) and has a range of about 100 miles or 162 km.
