In Europe, Satan’s fuel is still king despite the fact that the Dieselgate scandal polarized the public’s opinion on diesel more than it already was. Ford, for example, plays the fuel efficiency and CO2 improvements card when it comes down to the 2.0 TDCi.
For the 2017 model year, Ford updated the 2.0 TDCi in the S-Max, Galaxy, and Mondeo. This is a little dubious, at the very least, when you consider that Ford already presented the EcoBlue turbo diesel. However, some time will pass until the EcoBlue will replace the tried-and-tested TDCi. The first models to get the newly developed EcoBlue are the Transit and Transit Custom vans.
In the case of the 2.0 TDCi that motivates the S-Max, Galaxy, and Mondeo, the automaker has fine-tuned the oil chugger to such an extent that it now emits up to 7 percent less CO2 per kilometer. The update applies to both the 150 PS (110 kW) and 180 PS (132 kW) variants of the 2.0-liter turbo diesel.
As far as fuel economy is concerned, the 2017 Ford Mondeo boasts 4.6 liters per 100 km (51.1 U.S. mpg), the Mondeo Wagon is rated at 4.8 l/100 km (49 mpg), the S-Max multi-purpose vehicle is good for 5 l/100 km (47 mpg), while the Galaxy people carrier prides itself on 5.2 l/100 km (4.5 mpg) combined. Bear in mind that these economy figures apply for front-wheel-drive models fitted with the smallest wheels available, ultra-low rolling resistance tires, and equipped with the PowerShift six-speed dual-clutch automatic tranny.
Other than the updated 2.0 TDCi, the 2017 Ford Mondeo, S-Max, and Galaxy in Titanium specification now come as standard with Keyless Entry. More than that, the three Euro-spec models are now available with the SYNC 3 infotainment system. The European version of the Ford Mustang also gets SYNC 3 almost a year after the U.S.-spec Mustang received it for the 2016 MY. Later this year, SYNC 3 will be introduced in the Ford Edge as well.
