Have you ever gotten a little ding on the edge of your door from opening it in a tight parking space? It worries you to bits, and it’s also a constant reminder of your past error. Ford might soon have the answer for you, as the automaker will debut a door protector that pops out.
The product was developed by Ford engineers in Cologne, Germany, and will soon debut on the Ford Focus.
It might sound a bit impractical at first, but Ford has done everything to turn a good idea into a good product.
The device instantly pops out when it detects the door opening more than 15 cm and closes in just 60 milliseconds to allow for doors being slammed shut.
“The Door Edge Protector will be one of those features that we think will make customers say ‘Why didn’t someone think of this sooner?” said Matthias Tensing, product development system engineer. “It will help parents with children in the backseat or anyone who needs to park in a tight spot.”
