Like many of today's automakers, Ford plans on upping the ante on the crossover market, which has been growing in both North America and China. According to the company's vice president of global marketing, Jim Farley, Ford will experience a strong growth by 2017, mainly due to its utility vehicles.
Speaking at the Los Angeles Auto Show last week, Farley said Ford's CUVs are expected to boom by an impressive 41 percent, helping Blue Oval sales grow 23 percent from 2012 to 2017: "There is no other segment in our industry that is growing like utilities. We expect over the next five years this full family of [utility] vehicles to really drive our growth as a company."
Much of that growth will be in China, where crossover sales are booming, but Ford also estimates that their European utility sales will grow 65 percent during that same period. "The utility segment is projected to grow we think about thirty percent between now and 2017 in Europe, and we think we are going to grow twice that rate as a brand," Farley added.
Ford now has two global crossovers - the EcoSport and the Escape/Kuga - while the 2015 Edge and the 2016 Explorer will follow suit.
