The Toyota RAV4 was always a happy little crossover, but that’s not true anymore. The Japanese is upset due to having lost the lead in the segment created by its first generation and is ready to fight for regaining control. We recently drove one to find out if its efforts go in the right direction.
You can certainly feel they’ve made it bigger, but this is both good and bad. Ask the driver while you’re in busy traffic and you’ll get a bit of a frown. Nonetheless, repeat the question once the road is free and you’ll end up with a smile.
Oh and once you get off the road, the RAV4 feels pleasingly solid. Don’t goo all that far though, or you’ll upset the suspension. The ride height has been dropped 6.3 inches (160 mm) and the overall setup is biased towards on-road handling.
This compromise is a pretty tricky matter. We like such debates, so we’ve had an extended one in our 2014 Toyota RAV4 test drive.
