After launching a 760-horsepower bully of a supercharged V8, the folks at Ford Performance introduced three naturally aspirated V8s. The Coyote trio costs $11,500 apiece as opposed to a mind-boggling $29,500 for the 5.2-liter Predator.
From least powerful to punchiest, Ford Performance offers the Gen 4X Coyote (part number M-6007-M50H), the Gen 4 Coyote for manual applications (M-6007-M50D), and the Gen 4 Coyote for the 10R automatic transmission (M-6007-M50DAUTO). The primary difference between Gen 4x and Gen 4 is the number of throttle bodies: one 80-mm unit for the Gen 4X and two 80-mm units for the Gen 4.

Why did the Dearborn-based automaker develop a single-throttle-body version of the fourth-generation Coyote? As it happens, the 4X was designed with better fitment in mind. Another interesting detail comes in the form of weight. Ford Performance claims 445 pounds (202 kilograms) for the 4X, 453 pounds (205 kilograms) for the 4, and 445 pounds for the single-throttle-body 3.

Referred to as M-6007-M50C, the Gen 3 Coyote crate engine retails at $10,575 sans the control pack, alternator kit, air conditioning kit, motor mount kit, and engine cover kit. As far as the Gen 4 Coyote is concerned, the manual transmission flywheel is $405 and bears part number M-6375-M50. The billet-steel flywheel is compatible with all gens of the Coyote and the good ol' 4.6-liter Modular.

The alternator kit ranges between $390 and $465 at the moment of reporting, while a Mustang-branded engine cover is $200. Ford Performance highlights that said engine cover does not fit the first, second, and third-generation Coyote. The engine mount kit adds $165 to the tally. The air conditioning kit, on the other hand, will set you back a cool $1,090.

When it comes to compression ratios, the dual-throttle-body 4 is rated at 12.0:1 as opposed to 12.1:0 for the single-throttle-body 4X. The plasma-transferred wire arc spray aluminum cylinder block is joined by sintered steel connecting rods, a forged steel crank, and hypereutectic aluminum pistons.

12-millimeter head bolts, cross-bolted main bearing caps, and a thick main bearing bulkhead also need to be mentioned, along with a 9.5-quart steel rather than composite oil pan. Converted to metric, 9.5 quarts is 9.0 liters. Page number 371 of the owner's manual for the 2024 Ford Mustang reveals that Ford's Gen 4 Coyote takes 10 quarts of Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 engine oil. In case of extreme cold, 0W-30 is perfectly fine as well. The oil pan's drain bolt should be torqued to 19 pound-feet (26 Nm).

Ford recommends changing the oil every 5,000 miles or just around 8,000 kilometers. If you don't intend to drive your 2024 Ford Mustang that much over a 12-month period, you should still change said oil for a number of reasons, beginning with dilution and the obvious potential for sludging.

Coyote Gen 4 and Coyote Gen 4X both use dual injection, meaning that you shouldn't worry too much about carbon deposits. The dual-throttle-body Gen 4 develops a Mustang GT-matching 480 horsepower and 415 pound-feet (563 Nm), whereas the single-throttle-body Gen 4X is rated at 460 horsepower and 420 pound-feet (570 Nm) of twist.
