Ford Focus Is Cash for Clunkers' Best Seller

The Car Allowance Rebate System really helped the Detroit Three, as General Motors, Chrysler and Ford take 47 percent of all new car sales through the scrapping schemes. The figures have been provided by the Obama administration who currently steps up the pressure on senators to give their final approval over an extra $2 billion package for the program.

According to a report by The Detroit News citing data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Americans made 80,500 transactions through Saturday afternoon but the organization last month said the $1 billion funding would be enough for 250,000 vehicles.

General Motors, Chrysler and Ford took the lion's share in the Cash for Clunkers initiative, with Ford Focus being the best selling model in the program. Additionally, four of the top 10 best selling models are produced by the Detroit Three, the aforementioned source added.

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) last week raised concerns that the money might be insufficient to cover all orders and dealers might not be reimbursed. The White House administration approved on Friday another $2 billion which is expected to be voted by senators on Wednesday or Friday.

"NADA aggressively supports such additional funding and is working to secure it," the organization said in a release.

"NADA will continue to work with NHTSA to emphasize the importance that every dealer is reimbursed for a valid deal.  In this regard, the White House and DOT have emphasized to us the need for dealers to make every effort to ensure that their applications are complete at the time of initial submission. We will also continue to work with the Administration and members of Congress to meet the demonstrated consumer interest in the Cash-for-Clunkers program."
