The US market really doesn’t have that many of those sort of small hothatches they enjoy so much in Europe. We’re talking about the Renault Clio RS, the VW Polo GTI or the SEAT Ibiza Cupra. These cars are more affordable and more economical than their bigger hot brothers, the Megane, Golf and Leon, this being the way in which they compensate for their dynamic shortcomings.
The Hyundai Veloster Turbo is not in the right price range, while GM’s Sonic RS Turbo is... well, we really can’t be kind to it. But there is a global automaker that is going to bring a Euro-style mini hothatch to the us.
We’re talking about Ford, and their upcoming Fiesta ST. It might not be as powerful as a Clio RS, our favorite car in this segment, but the little Fiesta battles in economy and base price well.
Finally, the Fiesta ST has been confirmed for the US market. According to AutoGuide, Ford’s marketing manager Steve Ling told that “The Fiesta is the next to get the [ST] treatment.”
Get the treatment? It’s already gotten it, as you can clearly see for yourself. The production version has already confirmed to have a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine with 177 hp (180 ps). Europe will likely have both the 3- and 5-door, but in the US, there will only be the 5-door.
