Ford F-150 EcoBoost, 38 Hours to Finish Baja 1000

Months of testing, or torture testing, as Ford calls it, have ended for the F-150 EcoBoost with an achievement which is definitely worth its place in the carmaker's Hall of Fame. A truck equipped with Ford's newest engine managed to conclude the Baja 1000 race in 38 hours.

That time is worth 1,061 miles of nearly flawless running. Quite a feat, considering the fact that, according to Ford's claims, the engine went through no preparation whatsoever for the race. It has been randomly picked up from the assembly line of the Cleveland Engine Plant.

The Baja 1000 was not the first test for this engine, as it has been seen across the US performing gargantuan tasks like pulling logs or running for 24 hours with two NASCAR Sprint Cup Ford Fusions strapped to its back at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“I’ve never seen anything like it in a stock engine – especially one that’s been through what this one has,”
said Mike McCarthy, the driver of the F-150 in the Baja race. “This EcoBoost engine didn’t miss a beat. It took a beating and kept right on going. This is one tough engine.”

To put all the above words into figures, it's enough to say the engine is a 3.5l unit capable of developing 365 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 420 lb.-ft. (570 Nm) of torque at 2,500 rpm (a best-in-class figure, according to Ford). Up to 90 percent of the peak torque comes from in between 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm.

EcoBoost engines will become the backbone of Ford's engine lineup in the future, with about 80 percent of its models to adopt them.
