The sixth generation of the midsize crossover SUV has been quite a long time coming on the Old Continent, but now that it’s finally arrived, some markets get a better deal than others. Case in point, the Explorer Plug-In Hybrid launches in Spain with a sweet deal courtesy of Sony Interactive Entertainment España (SIE).
No need to guess what the offer is all about because we all know that when Sony is involved, a PlayStation console is never too far behind. In this case, it’s actually upfront with its own latest-generation (and eagerly awaited) PS5, which comes bundled as a gift for the customers paying from €79,350 (almost $97k at the current exchange rate) on a 2021 Explorer Plug-In Hybrid ST-Line.
It’s a bucket load of cash, given that Ford’s standard Explorer kicks off at $32,225 at home in the United States. Naturally, the powertrains aren’t the same, and the electrified version of the Explorer (the regular, 3.3-liter Hybrid) is a tad costlier across the ocean, as well – starting from $50,745.
On the other hand, the Spanish market arrival is solely offered as the Plug-In Hybrid, in ST-Line trim, according to the online configurator. That brings a 3.0-liter gas engine and electric assistance for a total of 450 hp (457 PS), enough for a sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) in six seconds and a maximum speed of 143 mph (230 kph).
More importantly, the Explorer PHEV has a maximum range of all-electric driving of up to 40 km (25 miles). As far as we can tell (our Spanish is a bit rusty) Ford and Sony have decided to celebrate together the arrival of both products on the local market - after a wait of seven years for the PS5 and two decades for the American SUV.
Getting a new PlayStation for free is always great but beware that Ford and Sony have already said the promotion lasts as long as there’s supply (and of course, they didn’t give an exact figure of the stockpile). At least there’s also a neat video (embedded below) to celebrate the release.
