Twinned with the Escape crossover, the Bronco Sport has two surprises in store for prospective customers. The 2024 model celebrates the free-wheeling spirit of the good ol' days with the Free Wheeling trim level, a throwback to the Free Wheeling Package previously offered on the F-100, F-150, Bronco, and Econoline.
The Black Appearance Package is the other important addition to the lineup, but that's not all. For the 2024 model year, two new colors will enter the Bronco Sport's palette in the form of Desert Sand and Azure Gray. Neither, however, is available in combination with the Free Wheeling Package or Heritage Edition.

What are you getting for your hard-earned money? Starting with the Free Wheeling trim level, which slots between the $33,700 Heritage and $35,915 Outer Banks, the $33,730 retro-infused crossover flaunts yellow, orange, and red exterior graphics. Ebony Race Red wheels also need to be mentioned, along with black bumpers, silver-painted grilles, and black mirror caps.

Inspired by the Bronco Sport Free Wheeling project vehicle from 2021, the series-production version further sweetens the deal with a Shadow Black-painted roof and Bronco exterior badges featuring a two-tone finish. Based on the Big Bend, this grade also stands out with the help of sunset inserts and ombre stitching for the seats. The final Free Wheeling-specific details come in the guise of red inserts on the doors and dash.

Equipped with a Safari-style roof, the Free Wheeling is a bit disappointing in the suck-squeeze-bang-blow department. The 1.5-liter EcoBoost is adequately powerful and torquey, but as far as reliability is concerned, the three-cylinder turbo isn't exactly dependable.
Fitted with 225/65 R17 all-season tires, the Free Wheeling uses the same eight-speed automatic transmission as every other Bronco Sport. As for its three-pot engine, make that 181 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 190 pound-feet (258 Nm) at 3,000 spinnies.

Moving on to the Black Appearance Package, said package is exclusive to the Big Bend trim level. At $31,230 before taxes and extras, Big Bend is the Bronco Sport's most affordable specification for 2024. The Base is nowhere to be seen, most likely because customers preferred better specifications for MY21 to MY23.

The Black Appearance Package's retail price is $1,750 at press time, according to Ford's build & price tool. Contents include 17-inch wheels in matte black, the very same finish for the hood graphics, and the Shadow Black-painted roof of the Free Wheeling. The black theme continues with a Carbon Black front grille, black exterior badging and lettering, and black bucking bronco emblem on the steering wheel's airbag cover.

Premium-trimmed sport contour seats round off this package nicely. To whom it may concern, the Black Appearance Package isn't available with the Black Diamond Off-Road Package or with Shadow Black exterior paint. Similar to the Free Wheeling, customers in the market for a Big Bend Black Appearance Package will have to make do with a three-pot lump.

The only Bronco Sport with a four-cylinder engine is the Badlands, whose 2.0-liter EcoBoost cranks out 250 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 277 pound-feet (376 Nm) at 3,000 spinnies. At the moment of reporting, the range-topping grade carries a sticker price of $38,390.
