The current CEO of Ford, Alan Mulally, is now 67 years old, and while it is known that he will not retire any sooner than the year 2014, the company has already begun to take steps to pass on the ‘CEO hat’ to somebody else, worthy to wear it.
Now, they have appointed Mark Fields, as the new COO of their Americas unit, and while speculation of the move began to surface a few weeks ago, it was only now that it was finally confirmed by an official source. Executive Chairman, Bill Ford, said, regarding Mulally eventual stepping down: "I'd like him to stay forever, but part of being a great CEO is also developing a great team."

Mulally was quoted as saying: "Mark is going to take over responsibility of leading the business plan review for the entire corporation. I'm going to step back from that to further advance the strategic issues of improving the One Ford plan." When asked if he thinks he would now take a back seat to running the company, he replied: "I've not had a COO before and I am really looking forward to nurturing and supporting Mark and supporting this team, but also contributing."

This is one of many moves taking place at the highest of executive levels, within the company, in order to shake things up, and perhaps provide a fresh perspective on how to achieve Ford’s common goals better, in the future.
