As you’re well aware, the Ford Motor Company plans to replace the F-150 for the 2021 model year. The fourteenth generation promises to be the most tech-savvy yet thanks to hybridization and complete electrification, but elsewhere in the range, the Coyote V8 could be replaced by a 4.8-liter engine.
As Ford Authority highlights, rumors in regard to the 4.8 started in 2016 when the American automaker announced millions of dollars in investments in Windsor plants. Part of the money went into upgrading the V8 production lines, which gets us to the next generation of fuel-efficient V8 engines.

Expected as a replacement for the Modular-based Coyote with 5.0 liters of displacement, the 4.8 is expected with “around 420 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque” thanks to direct injection, a dual overhead cam layout, and everything else you would expect from Ford’s engineers.

Not only would the 4.8 be more potent than the 5.0, but the lesser displacement would make it more efficient than the Coyote on the long haul. As with the current engine, natural aspiration will be offered instead of a twin-turbo setup as it’s the case with the 2.7 and 3.5 versions of the EcoBoost.

The 10-speed automatic transmission that Ford calls 10R80 is expected to do the shifting, and given the 23 miles per gallon out on the highway achieved by the Coyote, the 4.8 could get to 24, maybe 25 miles per gallon. As long as Ford manages to feature more aluminum alloy in the construction of the F-150, these expectations are realistic.

Spy photos of the 2021 Ford F-150 don’t leave much to the imagination, featuring a similar exterior design to the thirteenth generation of the light-duty pickup truck. The headlamps and grille do appear a bit different, but not as much as to not recognize the fourteenth generation as a Built Ford Tough product.

Not much is known about the next generation of the Raptor, but given the automaker’s push for turbocharging under the EcoBoost brand, the 3.5 could soldier on with minimal updates.
