Ford has announced it will offer of a naturally aspirated, 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder "Crate Engine Concept” starting next year as part of the Ford Racing Performance Parts offensive. What’s more, the unit is being called a precursor to a production-based I-4 offering.
The engine will offer an impressively high 12.0:1 compression ratio and will produce somewhere between 160 and 175 horsepower. As far as I can remember, Ford 2.0-liter naturally aspirated units are already being used in the Caterham Seven, where it churns out about 175 hp. Back in the day, the unit used to have longitudinal applications in everything from the Mondeo to the C-Max, and even in the sporty Fiesta ST, where it offered 150 hp.
Getting back to the crate version, this will offer everything you need to drop it into a car and start racing. The exciting news is that it will also be offered in EcoBoost form soon, which should could provide up to 300 hp.
