LSX454R Crate Engine Sold for $67,000

A good piece of engineering is a sure winner at any auction, regardless of the name of the seller. But if you name is GM and if you go about throwing some numbers and letters around until you get the LSX454R name, victory is almost insured.

Announced as slotted to go under the hammer ever since January, the above-mentioned crate engine was sold this week for $67,000 at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector car auction. (The same event witnessed the sale of the Lingenfelter custom 1955 Chevrolet pickup truck featuring the 5.3 E-ROD crate engine or the Superformance '63 Grand Sport Vette with the LSA E-ROD crate engine). The name of the men who knows how to properly appreciate an engine is Greg Mauzy, who found the sum he paid for it to be a bargain.

To add to the pleasure of being the only current owner of such an engine, all the money he paid for the unit will be donated by GM to benefit the American Heart Association, a long-time recipient of the manufacturer's attention and money.

“We are so grateful for the donation from both GM Performance Parts and Mr. Greg Mauzy. This funding will allow us to help so many people through education, awareness and research. Lives will be saved and that is our ultimate goal,” said Heather Kinder, executive director for the Southeast Michigan American Heart Association.

So, what did the Texan get for his money? Judge for yourselves. The unit 7.4l V8 giant, capable of developing 720 horsepower and 720 lb-ft (976 Nm) of torque. Words like high-compression, solid-roller combination, raised ports on the aluminum cylinder heads or pen-plenum intake manifold are used to describe this drag-race intended engine.
