From the first moment the Toyobaru project’s production versions, the Toyota GT 86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ went on sale, tuners looked at these cars and drooled, dreaming of putting their wrenches on them.
While the trio has received multiple aftermarket goodies so far, most of them target the exterior or the handling, but what we really wanted was something for that sweet, but a bit short on toque and power, 2-liter four-cylinder boxer engine under the hood.
Well, the day we’ve been waiting for has come. Behold the first turbocharged Subaru BRZ. The project comes from Accelerated Performance, a tuner based in Toledo, Ohio.
This was no easy task, as we’re talking about a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant that has been tuned for high performance, with Subaru using chain-driven dual overhead cams, a 12.5:1 compression ratio and roller rockers.
The high compression ration allowed Accelerated Performance to use 4 psi of boost, which can be translated into an extra 52 hp and 30 lb-ft (40.6 Nm). That might not sound so impressive, but it’s an amount that definitely makes the difference in the real world.
