The Audi A4 is over 20 years old, even older if you also include its predecessor. However, Audi only recently got the idea to separate the two-door A4 from the range and call it the A5. Some say it's not a real coupe because it comes with front-wheel drive, while others believe it is too heavy, but we know the A5 is here to stay.
In fact, Audi has already started testing prototypes at the Nurburgring and a few other places. They are in such an advanced state of development that they might even debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Most of the engines are already developed, and all it needs is some fine-tuning.

This next rendering of the A5 Coupe was just released by X-Tomi Design. It's obviously based on the A4 sedan, but offering fewer doors and a sleeker, sportier body. The look is appealing, even if some people will fail to see the difference between this and the current model.

The problem is that while the rendering is interesting to look at, it's not entirely accurate. Audi won't use the same headlights from the A4 on the A5, even though the LED technology will be shared. We have spy photos that suggest the "eyes" of the car will be narrower at the grille and wider at the edges. The fog light surrounds are also wrong, and the grille is supposed to fit lower down.

The new A4 and Q7 are too conservative, we admit. But we hope that the new Audi head of design, who gave us the lovely Prologue concepts, will do something interesting with the A5. Here are the main engines that we thing will become available starting in 2016:

• 2.0 TFSI with 190 PS (140 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft)
• 2.0 TFSI with 252 PS (185 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft)
• 2.0 TDI with 150 PS (110 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft)
• 2.0 TDI with 190 PS (140 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft)
• 3.0 TDI with 218 PS (160 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft)
• 3.0 TDI with 272 PS (200 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft)
