The facelift for the A6 mid-sized premium sedan and estate hit the European market late last year, meaning work is likely underway on an all-new generation.

According to the latest reports, the next A6 should come out in 2017 and in order to give us an idea of what the German sedan might look like, Theophilus Chin has created the following renderings.

Clear inspiration has been taken from the Prologue Concept car unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2014 in November and shown at the CES last week. Compared to the current model, it looks meaner and more dynamic, though we'd stop short of saying it's sporty.

The grille now dominates the front end design, protruding outwards, stretching to the headlights and offering a 3D mesh.

Our next-gen A6 model will be based around a new Audi MLB platform, the same one that helped the Q7 shed 325 kg (716.5 lbs). Don't expect that much weight loss here, though.

What you should look forward to is a brand new set of engines. Audi has already previewed electric compressors with the RS5 TDI and A6 TDI concepts, both of which used 3-liter turbodiesels with one turbo replaced by an electrically-motivated air compressor.

There should also be a plug-in hybrid model, powered by the same engine as the Q7 e-tron... or should we say engines? The all-new 2015 Audi Q7 combines a 257 hp 3.0 TDI with an electric motor. The combined output is 373 HP (275 kW) and 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft), which is delivered to all four wheels via an 8-speed gearbox.

Overall, the next-gen A6 remains a product only Audi fans will get excited about. But with 1.74 models sold in 2014, followers of the four-ringed brand have become increasingly numerous.
