Fire Safety Company Orders 200 Ford Fusion Hybrids

200 units of the Ford Fusion Hybrid will join the vehicle fleet of SimplexGrinell, a Tyco International company and provider of fire safety systems and services, as part of the company’s effort to replace 25 percent of its vehicles with hybrid cars.SimplexGrinell, which has a fleet of 5,000 large commercial trucks & vans and 2,000 cars, operates in 150 locations throught the U.S. and Canada.

The 41 mpg city & 36 mpg highway Fusion hybrids will be used primarily in major metropolitan areas, for city driving of less than 2,500 miles per month. The company will introduce the hybrids in fairly neutral climates, but will look to expand use in more demanding areas.

"The Fusion Hybrids will provide us with much greater fuel savings and CO2 reductions compared to the conventional gas vehicles they are replacing," said Jim Spicer, president of SimplexGrinnel. "They also are a perfect fit for our staff."

The new vehicles are included in a Tyco company-wide plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water consumption by 25 percent over the next five years. The vehicles will also be used by employees taking part in the EcoWheels Green Driver Challenge, which encourages drivers to use eco-friendly practices, such as reducing idle time, checking the tire pressure and planing routes more efficiently.

Based on enrollment so far, we will be saving more than 93,000 pounds of CO2, which is the equivalent of planting roughly 6,500 trees. We're looking forward to seeing how employees driving the new Fusion Hybrids will impact those numbers," said Janice Buxton, senior manager of Fleet Services for SimplexGrinnell, explaining the benefits of the aforementioned program.

Buxton added that SimplexGrinnell is looking to integrate the Ford Transit Connect into its fleet. ADT Security Services (also a Tyco company), the world’s largest electronic secutiry provider, plasn to order 3,000 Transit Connects within the next six months, in order to save $5.3 million in annual fuel costs while cutting carbon emissions.
