Over the years, Classic Recreations has become a household name for all things classic from Shelby and Ford - including bespoke carbon fiber models that are true supercars ready to compete on an equal footing with modern sports cars.
The company has become an icon among restomod fans – much like Singer is a legend for Porsche enthusiasts – but for models originating from the Ford Motor Company pool. They make high-performance Shelby cars, they restore and upgrade 1969 and 1970 Ford Mustangs, and they even work on trucks. Plus, some of these gems can also be fully wrapped in carbon fiber.

After Classic Recreations worked on the original Ford Mustang to make it a carbon fiber-bodied wonder, the next logical step was also to dress the iconic Shelby Cobra in lightweight attire and see what happens when the four-wheeled bomb becomes even lighter and more powerful. Well, in the world of aftermarket restomods, things can move at a different pace, by the way.

So, we first saw the full carbon fiber body for the 1965 Shelby Cobra revealed in early 2022, and it has taken around a year and a half to constitute the proper racer of the limited Diamond Edition with all things that are needed to make a fully functional car. The car, which owns the rights to the bespoke 60th Anniversary carbon fiber Shelby Cobra race car, will finally unveil the first example in front of the audience at Monterey Car Week 2023.

The event, which attracts interest from automakers around the world – even Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) will make their storied supercar debut in the US there, plus many carmakers will introduce special editions or fully-fledged all-new models (Acura ZDX) and concepts (Infiniti QX Monograph) is like a magnet with its big string of interconnected shows and events.

Classic Recreations, too, wants to leave its mark in California with the inaugural sneak peek of their Diamond Edition carbon-fiber Shelby Cobra racer – a "tribute to Carroll Shelby's unparalleled design and engineering, which has captivated collectors for 60 years." According to the company, only ten examples will be produced, and during Monterey Car Week, some limited allocations will be available for interested parties.

"We developed the Diamond Edition Cobra by starting with the question, 'What car would Carroll build with today's technology?' Our team painstakingly recreated this one-of-a-kind vehicle to carry forward the legacy and vision of one of the world's greatest car builders," said Jeff Stone, CEO at Classic Recreations. For many, this will be a very rare occasion to see this restomod off track and out of collector vaults, so if you are around for the events, be sure to visit The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 18 and then Exotics on Broadway the next day.

Just eight cars remain available out of the ten slots (serial numbers CSX 4521-4530), starting at $1.2 million a pop. However, given the "CAD-designed, race-inspired chassis, billet CNC-machined aluminum assembly components, cantilever suspension, and nearly 1,000-hp" engine, they may be well worth the money. The track weapon is also expected to weigh in at just 2,300 pounds (1,043 kg) when "wrapped in an aerospace-grade, pre-preg carbon fiber body that weighs a mere 88 pounds (40 kg)." That will undoubtedly make a great asset in the promise to "provide a bone-rattling experience."
