The Fiat-Mazda joint venture is one of the most promising endeavors of its kind, and in terms of actual good cars, we think it offers substantially more to Fiat than Chrysler ever could.
Since the paperwork between the two car makers is done, according to Mazda CEO Takashi Yamanouchi, they are in no rush to bear the fruits of their collaboration, as time limits usually result in the meeting of strict deadlines, often by cutting corners - this sounds great: two car manufacturers who want to share expertise and build good (and not rushed) cars together.
Apart from the Alfa Romeo Spider, nothing is set in stone, so they are free to decide at any point which project would deserve the most attention and where their collective experience would be best used. An example of a possible collaboration is for the two car makers to develop the next Punto together with the next Mazda 2 (a car which now is essentially a Ford Fiesta in a different body).
This makes for genuinely exciting news, as Fiat could benefit from Mazda’s new Skyactiv diesels, whereas Mazda could use the Italian manufacturer’s excellent MultiAir engines to power its smaller cars. We can’t wait to hear more!
