In business, you start your way at the bottom and work until you've reached the top. However, selling cars works the other way around. Just look at the Fiat 500X, a crossover that just received an entry-level engine few could have imagined at its debut.
If we say "1.3-liter" millions of Opel and Fiat owners will know exactly what engine we are talking about. The Italians have made nearly six million units of this downsized diesel. Now, you can buy one of those with the 500X, which despite its name is a large car.

Let's talk specs!

There are multiple versions of this engine, but in the 500X you will get one that delivers 95 PS and 200 Nm of torque 1,500rpm, sent through a 5-speed manual to the front wheels. That's not as underwhelming as the fact that 0 to 100 km/h sprints take 13 seconds, and the top speed is only 172 km/h.

The supposed benefit of having such a small engine is that fuel economy is good. The 500X will drink diesel at the rate of 4.1 liters per 100 km and emit just 107 grams of CO2. The engine complies with the latest Euro6 emissions regulations and brings several features aimed at reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

These include the intelligent alternator, which modulates the supply of energy depending on the actual demand and the state of charge of the battery. It also has an optimization of the cooling circuit, which reduces the time needed to warm-up.

The price?

That's another good thing about the small engine, as it starts at just €18,900 in Italy. Pop, Pop Star and Lounge trim levels are available. An indirect rival for this cheap Fiat model is the MINI One D, packing only 95 PS as well, thanks to a detuned 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine.

The new 1.3 completes the 500X's diesel range, which also includes a 1.6 Multijet with 120 PS and a 2.0 Multijet with 140 PS. European customers also get a choice of two small petrol engines.
