Ferrari's Engines to Become More Fuel Efficient in 2010?

It seems Felipe Massa's testing session at Mugello was not so much as a gift to the Brazilian driver but a way in which Ferrari could test a few “internal solutions” for their 2010 engine. Of course, we can't argue against the fact that Luca di Montezemolo genuinely wanted to give the Brazilian driver the opportunity to do another test prior to his official preparation for the 2010 season, but it's just that the Italian boss had some ulterior motives to do it.

According to a report from Spanish newspaper Diario AS, Ferrari have allegedly tested some improvements made to their Formula One engine in order to maximize fuel efficiency ahead of the 2010 season. As all of you probably know by now, refueling will be banned during the course of next season, meaning that the teams will have to find several solutions to tackle the fuel consumption problems that come with it.

While enlarging the fuel tanks is one idea that all teams should pick up for the 2010 season, improving fuel efficiency is definitely a solution also. And the pre-Christmas test for Massa was the perfect opportunity for Ferrari to test their new improvements. Of course, the news was not confirmed by anyone from Ferrari, as official testing for the 2010 championship will officially begin only in January.

As far as Massa's testing session goes, the Brazilian concluded his runs at Mugello with a 60-lap outing at the wheel of the Ferrari F2007, before leaving for his native Brazil for the Christmas holidays.

Although I was behind the wheel of a completely different car compared to the one for next year, I had a perfect feeling, which gives me hope for the upcoming season. I was very quick immediately and nothing seems to have changed in my driving style compared to before the accident. I want to thank Ferrari for this present, which, together with my son, makes this Christmas even more special,” said Massa.
